Now in a completely revised and expanded fourth edition, this widely adopted text and clinical reference provides a comprehensive guide to assessment and treatment of all of the major female and male sexual dysfunctions. Leading authorities demonstrate effective ways to integrate psychological, interpersonal, and medical interventions. Every chapter includes detailed clinical examples illustrating the process of therapy and the factors that influence treatment outcomes. More than an update, the fourth edition incorporates major advances in research and practice. New chapter topics include persistent genital arousal disorder in women, sexual desire disorders in men, physical therapy for female sexual pain, treatment of sexual abuse survivors, sexuality and culture, and sexual pharmacology. Doody Review Services Reviewer:Susan Richardson, MA, PsyD(Private Practice)Description:This book approaches the broad issues in sex therapy with updated information based on a field that is changing rapidly due to pharmacological and psychological discoveries.Purpose:The contributors to this edition of Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy deliver the most up-to-date, clinically sophisticated, and interdisciplinary approaches to the definition, assessment, and treatment of sexual problems and disorders. Given the rapid changes in the field in the last six years, a new guidebook is sure to be desired by those who teach and practice in this area.Audience:This book is for the clinician, the academic, and the graduate student in clinical or counseling psychology. The editor and contributors are well known in the field of human sexuality and widely published.Features:Operating definitions of some common disorders begin the book. The current diagnostic dialogues are important in a field that not long ago included homosexuality as a disorder. Two large sections include chapters on known disorders for each gender. The final section of the book covers special issues and includes chapters on a variety of topics, including sexuality and illness, gender dysphoria, and a guide to sexual pharmacology for the clinician. The book doesn't seek to underscore its generalizability to clinicians, but most therapists will recognize that patients they are treating for other causes have co-morbid sexual difficulties and these may predate or follow other difficulties.Assessment:This highly readable book is of value to mostpractitioners working with adults, even if their caseload is general and not specific to sex therapy. The updated information on pharmacology is very relevant given the high numbers of therapy patients who are also taking psychotropic medication. The definitions of difficulty/disorder are sensitive, enhancing an approach to sex therapy based on norms of behavior. This fourth edition comes six years after the third and it is highly justified with the pharmacological and diagnostic distinctions made.

\ From the Publisher"This state-of-the-art fourth edition nicely integrates psychosocial, biological, and medical information and treatment protocols. Presenting a variety of exciting advances in the field, the book is well organized and includes helpful chapter introductions. The tables that are incorporated into most chapters are particularly useful for graduate teaching. This is an ideal text for graduate sex therapy education, and it will also serve as a valuable and useful resource for training medical and nursing professionals."--Marsha T. Carolan, PhD, LMFT, Michigan State University   "This is a time of vigorous debate and reappraisal of sexuality and its problems, fueled by the need to balance new pharmacological interventions with appropriate psychological interventions. The previous edition of this book saw a shift to a model of care that combines both of these approaches, and the fourth edition reinforces this integrative emphasis. The main themes continue and have been updated, and with many of the chapters written by new authors, there are a variety of fresh perspectives. Invaluable reading for anyone training in or practicing sex therapy, this work has become the 'gold standard' text in the field."--John Bancroft, MD, Senior Research Fellow and former Director, Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction   "With this fourth edition, Leiblum demonstrates once again why she is this generation’s leader in the education and training of sex therapists. This outstanding, well-regarded text should be on the shelf of every practicing sex therapist and trainee. The chapters are well written, well organized, interesting, and timely. The liberal use of case study material enriches each chapter by illustrating the practical uses of the concepts described. As with previous editions, this book will be required reading in my graduate-level sex therapy courses."--Daniel N. Watter, EdD, private practice, Parsippany, New Jersey; Adjunct Professor of Psychology, Seton Hall University and Fairleigh Dickinson University   "This fourth edition is a 'must-have' for all clinicians working with sexual complaints and issues. Leiblum has assembled a truly multidisciplinary cadre of leading experts in the various subfields within sexuality practice. Based on cutting-edge research, all chapters optimally combine diagnostic and assessment issues with treatment recommendations, and are illustrated by in-depth, informative case examples and commentary. The book also addresses debates surrounding diagnostic issues, the integration of mental health and medical expertise, and more. I plan to use this text with third-year obstetrics and gynecology residents in a sexual medicine rotation. It is also ideal for graduate-level sex therapy students in a variety of mental health disciplines."--Lori A. Brotto, PhD, RPsych, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of British Columbia, Canada   "A silver anniversary is an important milestone worth celebrating, and this landmark text remains crucial and invigorating after more than a quarter-century. The fourth edition reflects many exciting, continuing advances in knowledge about sex and intimate relationships. It recognizes the need to assess and treat individuals and couples on both the psychological and physical levels, offering a balanced, integrative, and accessible understanding of each problem area discussed. This book is certainly a key text for trainee sex therapists, medical and nursing students, and practicing clinicians, and I intend to recommend it across a multidisciplinary training class of postgraduates."--Kevan R Wylie, MD, Editor-in-Chief, Sexual and Relationship Therapy; Porterbrook Clinic and Sheffield Hallam University, UK\ \ \ \ \ Metapsychology Online Reviews"Twenty three prestigious authors, academicians and clinicians have contributed to the fourth edition of this large comprehensive body of work. A multitude of challenging sexual complaints are fully described and attention given to the most current, integrated, evidence-based, clinically sophisticated methods."--Metapsychology Online Reviews\ \ \ Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic"An amazing overview of sex therapy by highly respected specialists with the most up-to-date knowledge in the field....The book is edited so well that it reads as if all of the chapters are written, beautifully, by one single expert....The case examples are extremely helpful and convey in practice the theory and research so thoroughly elaborated in each chapter....This text is extremely comprehensive, with chapters on complicated topics....This is a remarkable textbook that can add enormously to a clinician's knowledge."--Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic\ \ \ \ \ Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy"The presence of the heavy hitters in the field is one of the strengths of this volume as it gives the reader a view of the cutting edge of research and practice in sex therapy....A well-edited book that offers a clinically focused look from an expert's perspective, at the current status of sex therapy. It is appropriate as a text for a graduate course in sex therapy or for anyone who wants an update on current practices in this field. In addition, a number of chapters have relevance for anyone conducting therapy."--Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy\ \ \ \ \ From The CriticsReviewer: Susan Richardson, MA, PsyD(Private Practice)\ Description: This book approaches the broad issues in sex therapy with updated information based on a field that is changing rapidly due to pharmacological and psychological discoveries.\ Purpose: The contributors to this edition of Principles and Practice of Sex Therapy deliver the most up-to-date, clinically sophisticated, and interdisciplinary approaches to the definition, assessment, and treatment of sexual problems and disorders.
