Doody Review Services Reviewer:Cheryl Laskowski, DNS, RN, CS(Daemen College)Description:This educational CD-ROM works with both Windows 95/98 and Mac OS 8.5. Purpose:The format allows users to review basic concepts in psychiatric nursing better and faster than the more traditional review book approaches. The game-like method, with multiple choice questions based on psychiatric nursing categories, allows the user to learn at her/his own pace.Audience:The audience includes nursing students who are studying for the NCLEX and practicing nurses who are reviewing for the ANA certification exam in psychiatric/mental health nursing.Features:A vast array of material pertaining to the basics of psychiatric/mental health nursing is covered. Users have an opportunity to choose content for review (from a range of categories) as well as the number of questions to be reviewed at one sitting. The questions themselves address a variety of topics; some questions present brief case vignettes that are similar to common clinical situations. The format is generally excellent, with a "hint" button located to the left of the screen and immediate feedback relating to the accuracy of one's responses available once the user answers the question. At the end of each completed section, users receive a summary of correct and incorrect answers; they then have the option of reviewing all questions from that section or only the questions answered incorrectly. There is a print-out option available that notes the numeric score based on specific categories.Assessment:This interactive game is easy to install and is generally simple to navigate. A back button within the program may have been helpful. The immediate feedback with accompanying rationale adds to the educational value of the software. The only visual that was somewhat troublesome for me was the "problem" patient offering hearts for the correct answer and rage for the wrong one.
