The death of a grandparent is often a child’s first encounter with grief. Why did this happen? How do I feel? Drawing on concepts from psychology and a broad perspective on Christian faith, Remembering My Grandparent provides a sensitive and practical resource that will help children ages 7 to 13 cope with the death of a loved one. Kids can write, draw, pray, create and express feelings via concrete, hands-on activities.

One of the grandchildren had written a poem to her grandparents on a previous occasion, and it was included in the funeral service. The arrival of this volume made me curious as to how it would serve this young 12-year-old in dealing with her grief. Part One of the text allows the grandchild to write down memories of the funeral and the immediate thoughts about the grandparent's death. Part Two expands the experience by helping the grandchild to find where they fit in the family portrait, and how to honor the grandparent by giving to others. Part Three deals with holidays and the memories that they evoke. The author has included a message to parents at the beginning, to help them have the conversations that they need to have with their children. It also has a message to kids, to help them make the most of the memory book. I believe this book will be a tremendous gift book. However, the fill-in pages and the personalization that is encouraged will prevent it from being a viable purchase for a public or academic setting.
