Researching British Probates enables genealogists to exploit data on inheritance, family history, and property ownership in northern England. This largely untapped resource is a collection of many microfilm rolls of British wills and related documents easily available through the Family History Library. Some 1,700 branch libraries can give researchers access to this microfilm, but only those who use Researching British Probates will be fully able to benefit from the film's important contents. Researching British Probates is organized by county and by document type under each county. Booknews Inaugurates a series the purpose of which is to simplify the complexities of British probate jurisdictions and make the microfilms of the British probate collection of the Family History Library (Salt Lake City, Utah) more accessible. This and the forthcoming volumes are arranged by county (where needed, a county's description is made clear by a colored map depicting the courts of original jurisdiction). Following a brief introduction for each county is a probate decision table of all of the courts to be searched for a particular will, a listing of any known indexes and printed records for each court available in the Family History Library, and an annotated listing of the films by year and court. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
