Evil Dr. Stinky McNasty creates an enormous robot that refuses to obey a command to stomp out Ricky's hometown of Squeakyville. When the mad doctor tries to punish his uncooperative invention, the tiny mouse comes to the defense of the giant robot and it follows him home. Ricky's new "pet" bests the bullies, wows Ricky's class at school and manages to foil Dr. Stinky's attempt at revenge. Pilkey's tale may well give timid or bullied kids a shot of reassurance, but its humor falls as flat as Dr. Stinky's attempt to destroy the city. The evil genius behind this plan for world domination is Mr. Mosquito, who lives on Mercury. Mr. Mosquito hates his own planet, with its horribly hot days and freezing nights. Looking through a telescope one day, he sees some mice playing nicely in cool weather on earth. This happy scene triggers his plan. Mr. Mosquito creates some mutant mosquitoes in short order and orders them to attack Squeakyville, home to Ricky Ricotta and his Mighty Robot. Four large Mutant Mosquitoes are ready to destroy downtown when Ricky and his Mighty Robot arrive and spray them with a huge bug-spray storage tank. The defeated mosquitoes fly back to Mercury, but an angry Mr. Mosquito takes Ricky into his spaceship. The spaceship transforms into a Mecha-Mosquito that attacks Ricky's robot. The Mighty Robot will not fight back because he knows that Ricky is inside. Ricky tricks Mr. Mosquito and escapes. A tough final battle scene is dramatized in "Flip-O-Rama," where readers can simulate the battle by flipping designated pages. Mr. Mosquito is soundly defeated and the heroes fly home for chocolate milk and grilled cheese sandwiches. This title is part of the author's "Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot" series. Particularly when it is accompanied by black-and-white drawings that seem to jump off the pages and take on a life of their own! Though there is nothing particularly unique about this story itself, it is enhanced with 'flip-o-rama' pages periodically that invite the readers to animate the action themselves. In addition, at the end of the book, junior artists can easily follow the "How to draw the robot" directions, and thereby launch their own self-made characters. The book reinforces early readers who will feel proud and successful reading their first chapter book. With large print and brief dialogue surrounded by action drawings, the 3 to 5 page chapters result in a book easily mastered. Here, the duo battle extraterrestrial insects and an evil robot. In addition to telling an amusing story, the author also manages to squeeze in factoids about the planet Mercury, Flip-O-Rama animation, and cartooning lessons, though these may prove difficult for the targeted audience. Ontiveros's black-and-white cartoons enhance the humor and action, and the layout breaks the text into manageable chunks for new readers.
