Foreword\ \ \ by Barbara Ann Kipfer, Ph.D.\ \ \ In developing this new edition, I chose to focus on the modernity and scope of the language coverage. We live in the Internet age, making Roget's International Thesaurus ever more valuable. It can now be used in the wording of queries for search engines accessing the World Wide Web. To this end, I have included as many new words and phrases as possible, from general vocabulary to scientific and technological terms.\ The lists have been revised to add new terms, delete obsolete ones, and expand treatment. Quotations were retained if they could conceivably be valuable in a user's writings. Otherwise, unuseful quotations and outdated terms were set aside to make room for new synonyms, additional synonyms, and new lists.\ I wish to acknowledge the help, support, and guidance of Dr. Robert L. Chapman. I am honored to have been his choice of successor.\ I also thank John Atkins for his work in preparing the computerized manuscript. My editor, Greg Chaput, has worked hard to bring the project to fruition -- and a successful publication. George Alexander and Donna Ruvituso have done a wonderful job putting this all together technologically and typographically.
