Handle with extreme caution—the sea monsters of National Geographic's 3-D Large Format Film jump off the pages of this stunning pop-up companion book! Open any page for a dramatic demonstration of the most ferocious animals to ever stalk the Earth. Replicated from the film's cutting-edge, computer-generated images, the book's pop-up monsters leap into life at every opportunity. These breathtaking, paper-engineered images and foldouts will thrill readers of all ages. Behold the Styxosaurus, the stealthy hunter with the 20-foot neck; then dig up the fossils of these and other fascinating prehistoric sea creatures in informative lift-the-flap dig sites. Learn cool facts about paleontology and the fossil hunters who piece together the history of sea monsters. This visually eye-popping book explains the science behind the super-sized stars of this amazing film.Children's LiteratureThis "official pop-up book to the giant screen film" of a movie of the same name is not up to the usual National Geographic standard set by their earlier series of pop-up books produced in 1985-1995. These pop-ups are sometimes difficult to understand. In particular, a 5 " high cylinder pop-up in the middle of the second spread appears to be decorated with small fish swirling around in a tight circle. Something appears to be coming out of the center of the pop-up and two blue dinosaurs are coming out from behind it. Probably it is meant to be a school of fish being attacked by large sea creatures, but it is not very convincing since the entire scene is on top of the water. Indeed, most of the pop-ups are placed above the water but some are more effective than others. The book attempts to be more interesting to young readers by presenting a little fiction along with a nonfiction look at prehistoric sea creatures. On the opening page in large white print on the blue background of the ocean the fictional story begins. "One Spring day around 80 million years ago, a young female reptile swims to the shallows of an inland sea to give birth to two pups." The ongoing tale of the two prehistoric sea pups continues on every double page spread, while information about actual prehistoric water creatures living in the ocean between 65 to 100 million years ago is also present but in smaller print on the same pages. Six specific sea creatures of long ago are profiled. There are maps of the changing seas, smaller pop-ups under flaps, a wheel showing the development of sea creatures over millions of years, a series of pull-out pictures showing where and how ancient fossils are found, and a bit aboutjellyfish which apparently have survived intact since prehistory. This book may hold the most interest for those who have seen the movie. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
