This time they travel to the Golden Age of Baghdad in order to help a caliph spread wisdom. While traveling to Baghdad, Jack and Annie meet a friendly traveler who entrusts them with a precious book. On their trip Jack and Annie learn to be respectful and to be humble. One particular instance of this education is when Jack has trouble with a camel and calls it stupid. The traveler, Mamoon, then explains that the camel is one of the greatest miracles of the desert because it is capable of surviving in the harsh climate. Jack learns his lesson and is able to help his sister not to brag to some boys later in the book. Though bandits raid their caravan and a sandstorm separates the siblings from the merchants, by the end of the story both Jack and Annie have respect for the Arab world and succeed in helping the caliph. The author based this story on past travels to this land and used research on two caliphs from the ninth century as a basis for the character. 2005, Random House, and Ages 8 to 12.
