Master storyteller Peter Benchley combines high adventure with down-to-earth advice in a book that is at once a thriller and a valuable primer on being safe in, on, under, and around the ocean. In this informative book of real-life stories and practical advice, the author of Jaws draws on more than three decades of experience with the ocean to share stories and information about sharks and other marine animals, and to help the reader approach the ocean and its creatures with understanding and respect. Benchley distinguishes between dangerous and benign sharks, discusses what to tell children about the sea, and tells how to swim safely in the ocean, how to read tides and currents, and how to survive when danger suddenly strikes. Book Magazine One piece of non-news that managed to get people worked up during the summer of 2001 was the supposed epidemic of shark attacks off the East Coast of the United States. In his latest book about the sea's perils and wonders, Jaws author Benchley points out that this summer of the shark was nothing more than a media-inflated (not to mention statistically inaccurate) pseudostory. Benchley's book, a somewhat inconsistent mix of facts, folklore, memoir and practical advice, might have fallen apart from a lack of clear genre identity if it were on nearly any other topic. But being about the sea's most terrifying predator, and told by that predator's most enthusiastic advocate, it's hard not to be enthralled. Benchley engages the reader through a blend of bravado and humility, gained through personal experience and some harrowing close calls. He makes it enjoyable to believe in monsters.
