The author continues to generate interest in these cats and their battle to survive in the wild. The characters are skillfully developed, with a range of emotions and thoughts that draw readers into their dilemmas. Hunter provides a satisfying conclusion where the traits of maturity, compassion, loyalty, and strength are upheld as desirable. She demonstrates through Leafstar that being a leader does not require coercion or bullying but that humility and relying on others is vital to the welfare of all. The manga at the end is an added bonus, providing a mini-adventure in cartoon form. Starvation, sickness, and ferocious rats eventually led the Clan to disband entirely. Not until the current cats of the gorge met a traveler named Firestar did they learn about their ancestors' history. Now, they are determined that SkyClan will live again, with newly anointed Leafstar as their leader. Despite her best efforts, Leafstar must deal with challenges that no clan leader has faced previously, such as the inclusion of "daylight warriors"—disparagingly referred to as "kitty warriors" by some—who spend days with the clan and nights as "kittypets" under the care of two-legs. Even more troublesome are three cats from afar who arrive suddenly, asking to learn about Clan ways, but who seem to be after more than just lessons on the Warrior Code. With her clan infighting and her deputy making troublesome alliances with the foreign warriors, Leafstar can only wonder...is SkyClan doomed to fail again? This book will appeal to fans of Hunter's other stories in the "Warriors" series, but it also differs from her previous focus on Clan tensions in its exploration of self-doubt, trust, and loyalty.
