Modern Chinese assigns a single symbol, or character, originally derived from pictures, to each word of the vocabulary. Even to read a newspaper you would need to know at least 3000 - 4000! Since 1892, Chinese words other than personal and place-names, have been transliterated phonetically in the English-speaking world, to ease western comprehension; and in this phrasebook we will be using the most widely-used method of transliteration, known as hanyu pinyin.
