\ Translation ReviewGraced by a number of virtues that recommend it to anyone interested in poetry, women's studies, Scandinavian literature, or translation.\ \ \ \ \ Library JournalEleven contemporary Swedish women poets, four of them Fenno-Swedish, are represented in this bilingual collection. Each is introduced by a photo, a short biobibliographical note, and a statement by the author. The selection criteria are not clearly stated. Elsa Grave and Solveig von Schoultz began publishing in the Forties, the remainder in the Seventies and Eighties; some of the latter are not very well known. The translation is competent but seldom felicitous. Some poets don't translate well (e.g., Grave, von Schoultz); texture, melody, and imagery suffer, rendering the poems less powerful and meaningful. The younger poets generally fare better. Still, this is the first anthology of its kind and as such is recommended for Scandinavian collections.-- Ulla Sweed ler, Univ . of California Lib . , San Diego\ \ \ BooknewsA beautifully produced, edited, and translated (by the editors) bilingual anthology of seven Swedish and four Finnish poets, all writing in Swedish, and all deserving of the attention this project should bring. Photos of the poets are included, and in their notes, their views on poetry and women. Published by The Spirit That Moves Us Press, PO Box 820, Jackson Heights, NY 11372. Annotation c.
