\ Children's LiteratureHooray for mom! This endearing picture book celebrates the diversity of motherhood while highlighting the tasks common to the role, regardless of the species. Whether she is a mother of a human being, a baby chick or a blue whale, a mom's job is pretty much the same and always multi-faceted. The authors warmly describe how mothers birth, care for, feed, defend and love their offspring. Mothers are charged with so much importance, in fact, that the authors bestow the title Supermom upon them. Each page is a delight as it warmly connects moms and children of all shapes and sizes, and urges readers to focus on similarities among creatures rather than differences. At the end of the book, the authors have helpfully added an index, which points out one important fact about each animal in the book and a reference to the appropriate page. 2001, Albert Whitman & Company, $15.95. Ages 4 up. Reviewer: Michele Gable\ \ \ \ \ School Library JournalPreS-A simple look at the nurturing nature of and similarities between animal and human mothers. Supermoms come in many sizes and colors, including 26 familiar animals and women from a variety of ethnic groups. Despite the diversity, these moms have much in common. "Supermom has babies! She lays eggs-or she carries her babies inside her body until they're born." The accompanying illustrations show a mother snake coiled around her eggs and the rounded bellies of a blue whale, a cat, and a human mother inset with pictures of their growing babies. Captions next to each figure give additional facts, e.g., "Blue whales are the biggest moms on earth!" "Cats can have lots of babies." Other spreads show animal and human moms bathing, cuddling, protecting, and feeding their young. The text and colorful cartoon-style illustrations set against ample white space work together to lead the eye across the pages. The watercolor, graphite, and crayon artwork reflects the light approach to the scientific facts, similar to this team's My Body, Your Body (Watts, 1997), and gives the book a warm and comfortable tone.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.\ \
