Children's Literature The fairy tales found in this text are certainly well-known, ranging from "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel" to "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Elves and the Shoemaker." What makes this compilation unique is Eden's choice of illustrations; the various drawings, paintings, illustrations, and post cards were all created between 1851 and 1948. They originally adorned earlier versions/compilations of various fairy and nursery tale books and were created by well-known artists such as Arthur Rackham, Herm Vogel, Jeannie Harbour, and W. H. Margetson. The individual illustrations—in color as well as ink on paper—are all interesting, beautiful, humorous, charming, and on occasion, frightening, and will certainly catch the attention of readers of all ages. I did, however, find it jarring on occasion to have two very different styles of illustrations page-to-page in the same story; for example a very ornate painting by Bess Living from an original version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs felt odd across the page from a more minimalist A. B. Frost print from 1919's Phantasmagoria. Nevertheless, this is a beautifully articulated book, and adults will enjoy sharing it with the children in their lives. Reviewer: Jean Boreen, Ph.D.
