Thoroughly updated, the new second edition incorporates the latest ACLS protocols from the AHA and is compatible with the latest DOT curriculum for EMT-Basic. New chapters have been added on the assessment of drug reactions, hazardous waste emergencies, and the AIDS patient. An invaluable tool to the certified EMS provider and a helpful classroom text for the student. Phillip M. Harter This book takes the unusual form of a story, with the narrator in search of the 60 Second EMT. Each chapter is another vignette based on a different presenting symptom, such as syncope, chest pain, abdominal pain, or trauma. This book is designed to teach an EMT skills necessary to detect diagnostic clues and to select and implement triage and treatment with a decreased reaction time. The book is written primarily for paramedics and basic EMTs. Both students and practicing prehospital providers can benefit from it. Although written for these prehospital providers, medical students and interns with an interest in emergency medicine might find this an entertaining review of basic emergency care. Each chapter addresses a different presenting complaint and sorts through the differential diagnosis, physical assessment, and emergency management of the various possible diagnoses. Pearls are outlined at the end of each chapter and important concepts are presented in a box on the page of the text. The table of contents and index are adequate. The appendix has a series of algorithms on the rapid assessment of the ABCs. There are no illustrations or references. This book is an entertaining adjunct to classic basic EMT or paramedic training. In no way can this be used as a basic text. Therefore, it is worthwhile, but not essential. It is a good review of common, and often difficult, clinical conditions. It would be useful for a practicing EMT, paramedic, or student to use to sharpen his or her skills.
