Henrik Wergeland (1808-1845) was one of the main figures in Scandinavian Romanticism and ranks as one of Norway's greatest poets. He worked tirelessly for civil rights for Jews in Norway. Upon his death, grateful Jews outside Norway collected funds for a memorial that was unveiled in 1849 on the anniversary of his birth, June 17. Organized by the Norwegian Students Union, the memorial ceremony began with an immense procession of people from all levels of society, headed by a band and four singing societies. As many as 1,600 people obtained tickets to enter the cemetery while those outside the gates milled around the edges to listen to speeches, songs, and music written for the occasion. The monument is inscribed, "Henrik Wergeland, the indefatigable advocate of freedom and justice for humanity and all citizens. Grateful Jews outside the borders of Norway erected this monument to him MDCCCXLVII."
