Dyer's (1864-1927) order for soldiers to fire into a crowd in an enclosed public square in Amritsar in April 1919, is the pivot of Collett's biography. Himself a British historian and former commander of Gurkha regiment, he places the event within the entire British colonial experience in India, including the role it played in the Indian independence movement.
