Smaller in size and therefore less intimidating than many encyclopedias, it is likely to be attractive to children throughout the middle school years. There are lots of color photographs and beautiful topographical maps. Labeled illustrations, some with magnified detail, really draw the reader in. Text is written in an accessible, clear and interesting manner, and one could virtually spend hours poring through the various topics. Geography, history, biology, botany and current world events are all generously represented, and much more. The encyclopedia itself is in alphabetical order and there are cross-reference boxes to point the researcher to related topics. International organizations are listed, as well as, interestingly if sadly, all the recent wars and conflicts on our troubled planet. There is a complete listing of the U.S. states with their capitals, populations, areas and date of entry in the union. Wow! The index in the back is comprehensive. This is a jewel of a research tool and would be an asset in any middle school library or classroom. 2001, Kingfisher, $14.95. Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Nancy Partridge\ \ \ School Library JournalGr 3-8-This compact volume holds tremendous visual appeal while offering the basics on hundreds of broad topics, from "Africa" to "Zoology." Though the introduction's claim to cover "all the topics that children explore at home and at school" is somewhat exaggerated, this encyclopedia does contain an astonishing amount of information. Excellent use is made of diagrams, color illustrations, photographs, and informative captions to achieve this effect, and text is broken up into manageable chunks. Each entry gives from one to four pages of coverage with good cross-referencing, and an eight-page index completes the volume. Tables at the back include state populations and U.S. presidents. Because of the scope, some popular encyclopedia topics (such as detailed state and country information) are not covered. While this work may be of limited use to libraries, it would make an excellent ready-reference book for home collections.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.\ \
