Phylogenies—or trees—are typically used to describe the descent of relationships between species in evolutionary studies, but here they are used to describe cultural variation within one species. Contributing anthropologists first test the assumption of the phylogenetic model for cultural diversification, that is, whether traits are related across different cultures by vertical descent or by borrowing.
