Though he is desperate to escape, Charlie is forced to clean and cook for the pirates and is locked up every night. Charlie develops several schemes that he hopes will help him to escape, but his attempts at escape result in him accidentally saving the ship several times. But by saving the ship, he manages to gain the pirate's trust which finally provides him with a chance to escape. The pages are filled with drawings of pirates and Charlie and numerous inventions he comes across or creates; the edges are darkened to appear weathered, and several fake water spots appearing throughout the text add whimsy to the text.
