\ Children's LiteratureIntended for middle school social studies classes, this well written book gives an insightful look at the complex issue of world hunger. The fact that one in eight people suffer long-lasting hunger is a sobering fact to most students in the United States. The book does an excellent job of discussing the many factors that cause widespread hunger in a country and the effects on the health and welfare of its people. Color photos, maps and charts aid the reader in developing an understanding and provide information for lively debate. Suggestions for diminishing the extent of this worldwide problem are discussed. An index and resources for further study are included. 2003, Twenty-first Century Books,\ \ \ \ \ VOYAIn this well-researched book from the series "In a Perfect World", Fridell begins by describing the state of hunger in third world countries, and he goes on to update the situation in the United States. The books in this series are relatively short and filled with color pictures and maps that break up the monotony of the text. Although the series might appear to be for lower-level readers, the vocabulary and concepts are not. Students who are looking for data for research reports will find enough statistics and information from a variety of knowledgeable sources to give them the necessary background to understand the problems in depth. As an added bonus, Fridell includes a list of current Web sites that will give readers additional insight into the problems. He also provides a list of keywords for researchers to use should they want to look further on their own. The War on Hunger is especially timely with the inclusion of how Saddam Hussein has used hunger as a weapon to control people. The section on free trade and tariffs will give readers an excellent understanding of these difficult economic terms. Although these books will primarily be used for research reports, the addition of several countries currently in the news, such as Afghanistan and Iraq, make them valuable for gaining a better understanding of the living conditions in the third world.
