M. Stirling, author of Island in the Sea of Time, sends a likeable young barbarian across the Channel to Alba, for a confrontation with a wizard from faraway Nantucket that will change his life forever...* David Gerrold, creator of "The Trouble with Tribbles," who takes you to a remote countryside surrounded by a mysterious darkness, whose secret has yet to be revealed...Publishers WeeklyAlso for young adult readers, The Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy for Teens, edited by Jane Yolen and Patrick Nielsen Hayden, offers nearly a dozen selections "the majority of them.. gleaned from adult magazines, Web sites, collections, and anthologies," according to Yolen. Still, names of contributors such as Garth Nix-who pens an eerie tale of the double-edged sword of Joy and Sorrow-and Rudyard Kipling will likely be familiar to YA readers. Although every story has merit, two are exceptional: David Gerrold's "Dancer in the Dark," an eerie tale of life in a world without light; and Bradley Denton's "Sergeant Chip," an unusual account of the horrors of war and the loyalty of soldiers. Four stories-"The Faery Handbag," "Sleeping Dragons," "CATNYP," and "The Wings of Meister Wilhelm"-feature female protagonists. In addition to the selections being enjoyable to read, they defy stereotypes of the genres, and each one has an excellent introduction that provides background information and recommends similar kinds of stories/novels.-Jessi Platt, Auburn Public Library, AL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.\ \
