\ Library JournalQuijada is a new Latino voice from El Salvador. Previously published only in his own country and in Cuba, but translated into a number of foreign languages, he appears for the first time in American English. While he is compared to Vallejo and Neruda by some, his somewhat minimalist techniques are more reminiscent of the tragic Chilean, Nicanor Parra. This collection is uneven in maintaining a level of intensity. Many of the poems are only marginal comments about life in a repressive society, in tone not unlike the colloquial prose that dominates a lot of North American poetry today. However, he does get some good licks in: ``What will happen then/ to the stock market? What will become of the / bullet-proof jackets, the Levis, the songs of Sinatra?/ Are we in agreement, Ferlinghetti?'' Ultimately the soaring vision is lacking that could lend a tragic credibility to the plight of his nation.-- Ivan Arguelles, Univ. of California at Berkeley Lib.\ \
