Herron, MD(University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)\ Description: This book attempts to rectify the dearth of information available for those working with individuals with disorders of gender identity by focusing on the clinical evaluation and management of these patients.\ Purpose: Primarily meant as a guide to assist clinicians, this book attempts to walk providers through the process of screening, evaluating, and treating men and women with gender identity disorders.\ Audience: Although there is useful background information and valuable insights for anyone interested in this topic, the main beneficiaries of this guide are the clinicians working with individuals diagnosed with various types of gender identity disorders.\ Features: Packed with clinical vignettes, this book takes a more practical, and less academic, approach to understanding these disorders. While the chapters regarding referral and initial assessment are useful, the power of this book comes from the chapters related to the real life experience of these patients and the thoroughly covered (both surgical and nonsurgical) treatment options. Of particular interest are the photographs of individuals undergoing gender reassignment surgery, as well as the explanations of the proper terms used to discuss these individuals.\ Assessment: Though my knowledge of this subject is limited, as the editor correctly explains, there are very few practical, or for that matter, useful resources for clinicians treating individuals with gender identity disorders. This book was clearly penned by providers with exceptional clinical experience, as well as a definite interest in offering education to those having questions regarding these patients. Despite the fact it is written by clinicians practicing in the United Kingdom, many of the concepts are likely to be applicable to those practicing in the United States. This is an excellent resource for any mental health provider, but is a must for those frequently treating patients with gender identity disorders.\ \
