Written for a graduate course in clinical methods, this textbook outlines therapy strategies for articulation and phonology in children, adult aphasia, fluency, and voice disorders, and describes therapy targets and activities as illustrations of basic intervention practice and starting points in the therapeutic process. The third edition adds a chapter on oral language in children and adolescents. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR Lee W. Ellis This manual offers introductory information related to treatment principles and treatment approaches for specific communication disorders. Basic information on reporting systems and client and family counseling is also included. The primary purpose is to provide an introductory guide to intervention that describes in a single resource basic information, protocols, and procedures for intervention with a wide variety of communication disorders. The manual generally appears to have accomplished this objective. It is intended primarily for undergraduate and graduate students in speech-language pathology, although the authors suggest that practicing clinicians may also find it to be a useful reference guide. Helpful tables, charts, and forms appear throughout the manual and in the rather extensive appendixes. Use of the manual should be facilitated by the similar organizational format of each of the chapters covering specific disorders. Following a brief description of the more common characteristics of the disorder, each chapter describes case illustrations, suggestions for selecting therapy targets, sample therapy activities, a list of "helpful hints" on intervention, and a list of commercially available therapy materials. Examples of additional readings providing more in-depth coverage are also included. This manual provides a well-organized and reasonably extensive presentation of basic information related to the treatment of communication disorders. It deserves serious consideration, particularly as a text in an introductory course in clinical methods or as a reference source for students in communication disorders.
