New to the third edition are revised and new sections on topics that include cell microenvironment; immunity and inflammation; effects of stress and pro-and anti-inflammation processes on cellular and humoral immunity; biology of cancer; tumor invasion and metastasis; obesity; thyroid hormone; alterations in pulmonary function, the urinary tract, reproductive function, digestive function, and integument; and musculoskeletal alterations in children. The chapters are organized into two main parts; basic concepts of pathophysiology--with chapters topics that include the cell, genes and genetic diseases, altered cellular and tissue biology, immunity, inflammation, biology of cancer, and cancer in children--and body systems and diseases. The CD-ROM contains answers to chapter questions, critical thinking questions, algorithm exercises, key term and definition matching exercises, and a glossary of terms. Huether and McCance both teach at the College of Nursing of the U. of Utah in Salt Lake City. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR Roxanne Pickett Hauber This book presents pathophysiology affecting bothadults and children, using a streamlined approach to address the keycontent regarding pathophysiology. The book was developed to offer asimplified, more elementary version of the authors' textPathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adultsand Children. The book is designed to highlight essentialpathophysiology content in a basic and easy-to-understandmanner. Although the authors only specify faculty and students, it ismy opinion that this book clearly targets baccalaureate undergraduatestudents. Of particular strength are the chapters in part 1 of thebook that help move the student into a more conceptual approach toaltered patterns in physiological function. In addition, the frequentuse of well-delineated diagrams facilitates a concise presentation ofmaterial. Last, the Did You Understand section at the end of eachchapter isolates crucial aspects of the chapter. This book is a moresimplified version of the authors' excellent text. It is an excellenttextbook for pathophysiology in baccalaureate nursing programs. Itsfrequent use of tables and diagrams makes for concise presentation, quick referencing, and excellent teaching aides. The Did You Knowsection at the end of each chapter cues the student to crucial pointsin the chapter. The content is written by individuals recognized asexperts in their areas. The book is addressing a need in the field fora more conceptual approach to pathophysiology at the undergraduatelevel.
