\ From The CriticsReviewer: Brian Marshall, O.D.(Marshall Family Eye Care)\ Description: This unique book blends the theoretical concepts of vision development with clinical diagnoses and useful management of pediatric visual disorders. \ Purpose: It is important for eye care providers to have a thorough understanding of visual development before effectively diagnosing and treating pediatric visual problems. This is the rationale for this new book, and it is a very worthy objective, although a difficult task for one book to accomplish.\ Audience: The book is appropriately written for eye care practitioners, residents, and students. In addition, occupational and physical therapists also will benefit from this information. \ Features: The first of the book's four sections covers what we currently know about normal visual development. During the first five years of life, our visual system goes through many complex developmental changes. This section discusses these important milestones and thereby lays important foundations for the subsequent sections. The second section describes the ways to accurately evaluate visual functioning, detailing the various clinical testing methods and discussing visual anomalies that can occur in the pediatric population. The third section is dedicated to treatment options and therapy strategies, and it is current and comprehensive. Finally, the last section deals with normal and abnormal vision development. The most important parts of this book are the sections on testing and treatment. Both are very well written, comprehensive in coverage and a joy to read. The various diagrams and pictures are well placed and contribute greatly to clearly presenting the information. Unfortunately, the color photos are all grouped together at the front of the book, almost as if they were added as an afterthought. \ Assessment: This book bridges the gap between basic vision science and clinical application and gives practitioners a more complete picture of pediatric vision anomalies. It also makes this a very unique book with no real competition and, therefore, a great book for any practitioner who examines children's vision.\ \
