This is the first resource for speech-language pathologists who assist transgender/transsexual patients in developing authentic voice, language and nonverbal communication congruous with their gender identification. This text guides clinicians who work with this population in designing and administering a focused and efficient treatment plan. Includes a CD. Doody Review Services Reviewer:Mary Elizabeth Moody, MA, CCC-SLP(George Washington University)Description:This book provides a sound basis of current knowledge and treatment for the transgender/transsexual client population. It is a much-needed reference that includes the diverse aspects of the approach to treatment and serves well as the vanguard in this field.Purpose:The author indicates in the preface that the approaches presented might serve as guidelines and that the information might help to standardize treatment methods. The objectives are worthy; the book delivers even more than the proffered purpose. Audience:According to the author, the book is written for practitioners with prior experience in the field of voice. I completely concur. The authors demonstrate credibility repeatedly by displaying a solid knowledge base in the area, and by developing a very sensitive and accurate approach to treatment.Features:The book addresses multiple aspects of treatment for transgender/transsexual clients. The approach is thorough, taking into consideration the whole client: medically, psychologically, linguistically, pragmatically, vocally. I was especially taken with the chapters by Sandy Hirsch regarding non-verbal communication: the current research is very clearly presented and combined with practical and concrete treatment strategies. After working for years with TG/TS clients, I have seen repeatedly that this approach is the best appreciated and understood.Assessment:I know of no other book in the field that approaches this topic so thoroughly and completely. As a standard reference in the field, it stands with Van Riper's initial offering or Boone's first books. An excellent and much needed validating breakthrough.
