This book uses various theoretical perspectives to summarize what is known about the multiple causes of men's violence against women, and stresses the importance of identifying men's risk factors. The preliminary multivariate model identifies four content areas: macrosocietal; biological; gender role socialization; and relational factors to explain men's violence against women. Within these four content areas the editors develop thirteen preliminary hypotheses about the causes of men's violence against women, which are critiqued by the contributors in the subsequent chapters. Booknews Harway (Director of Research, Phillips Graduate Inst., Encino, CA) and O'Neil (family studies, U. of Connecticut, Storrs) put forth in the first two chapters 13 hypotheses based on a multivariate model about the causes of men's violence against women. In subsequent chapters other contributors critique or react to specific parts of the model and one or more of the hypotheses as they present their own ideas about the causes of men's violence against women. The editors conclude by synthesizing all of the discussions and put forward a new model which takes all the data into consideration. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
