Willmore Horseback Adventure: Adventures with Grandchildren

A 500-pound grizzly bear chased a ground squirrel a scant 100 feet from us while her twin cubs watched. Emily and Jessica sat quiet as church mice as the chase continued. With a flying leap, the sow bear caught the squirrel and fed it to her hungry cubs. My 9-year-old twin granddaughters, Emily and Jessica, joined four hikers, seven wranglers and me on 16-day horseback adventure in the Canadian Rocky Mountains of Alberta Canada. The Wild Rose Outfitters used 24 pack horses and 10 riding horses to take us deep into the 1,700 square mile wilderness park without roads, bridges, houses or permanent residents. We camped at six remote sites high in the Rocky Mountains. A sugar-coating of frost covered our tents each morning. During the day, we rode over snow-covered mountain passes, through virgin spruce forests, across rain-swollen rivers and along knife-edge ridges to see some of the most spectacular wilderness country in the world. Our cook prepared gourmet meals in a wilderness camp environment: charcoalgrilled steak, pork chops, lasagna, shepard's pie and salmon with a different type of fresh salad every night and our choice of red and white wine for supper. When Emily and Jessica weren't on the trail they were wading in the creek, chasing butterflies, shooting at tin cans with their sling-shots, fishing, roasting marshmallows, reading stories, making dream catchers, looking for fossils or begging Dave to play the "Pickle" song on his guitar so they could sing along. The horseback ride turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime.
