Narasimhan examines the connections between text literacy and the oral tradition, primarily in India. He contends that forms of articulation that have been previously considered to be available only in the written tradition have actually been practiced using only oral and artistic methods. He then introduces a revised characterization of literacy that defines it as the capacity for reflective thinking, supported by technology.
