Solidly rooted in current cognitive psychology and motivation research, this book applies the findings of such research directly to classroom teaching and students' learning. Discernable throughout the book is the authors' belief that a solid understanding of the cognitive psychology perspective enhances a teacher's ability to understand educational goals, educational processes, and the overall educational system. After an introduction to the basic principles of cognitive psychology and its position in education, the book explains cognitive processes, explores the importance of beliefs and motivations in the process of cognition, and, finally, examines the ways cognitive psychology informs teaching and learning in specific content areas. Devotes an entire chapter to sensory, short-term, and working memory, presenting the modal memory model. For future educators. Emily Trittschuh This is the third edition of a cognitive psychology text uniquely geared toward practical instruction in the field. The second edition was published in 1995. "The purpose is to teach educators about cognitive psychology and how to effectively pass on this knowledge. To this end, the text serves its worthy objective. "This book is geared to psychology educators. "The conveniently organized chapters have many examples for the concepts presented. The concluding section of each chapter deals specifically with issues related to the instruction of the material presented. This format works well for those who seek to gain a personal understanding of the basic concepts of cognitive psychology and also for those who want to focus on methods of instruction. The editors of this edition have selected relevant and pertinent aspects of cognitive psychology and display their own experience in this field. This third edition includes two new sections that appropriately reflect changes and new developments in the field. The new sections address how beliefs affect cognition and how cognitive psychology can be used for more effective problem solving and critical thinking. The text contains only black-and-white illustrations, which is unfortunate. Those that are included are helpful to comprehension. In the sections aimed at aiding instruction, there are many case examples of students and their cognitive approaches to facing challenges. While these examples may help illuminate the difficulties that affect understanding of various concepts, they seem simplistic in a text whose audience is most likely already trained at the graduate level in psychology. "The few drawbacks should not detract from theutility of this text and the excellent knowledge presented. The editors have created a new edition that is prospective and instructive.
