Her message is that God who is all love, all goodness, and the source of all existence, will make all things well. Yet Julian also asks: 'How shall all be well?' in the face of suffering and pain. It is a question we still ask today. Julian's text has survived centuries of turmoil and change, bringing comfort, understanding and wisdom to people who, like Julian, live in a mix of 'well and woe'. As far as we know Julian the anchoress was the first woman to write a book in English. She had an extensive knowledge of the Bible and other religious and mystical works, as well as her own creative ideas and style.
