\ Library JournalQuist's uncle Joe Haan was a Minnesota farm boy who endured a lot and became greater for it. Just another dogface in Patton's Third Army with a reputation for brawling, he spent three days pinned down in a foxhole with a dead German. He passed much of that time examining his life and writing about his experiences. A taxidermist, poet, and musician after the war, Joe made a good life but never forgot his companion in that foxhole. The book's three parts (growing up a dirt farmer in Minnesota, marching across Europe at war, Haan family history and genealogy) don't hold together well as one gripping narrative, making this an optional addition to large collections, perhaps more for inspirational or biography categories than for war history.\ \
