Goddess of Justice captures in realistic detail the frustrations, failures, and successes of American-born adults who cannot read, write, or perform basic computational skills. Hannah Goodman, a literacy teacher in a Midwest university town, is faced with the often impossible task of helping these adults obtain their GED, as ordered by the courts. She has her heart set on teaching 21-year-old Emily Bartok at least basic skills, but the girl's lover, Peter Wright, who himself is illiterate and refuses to take literacy classes, fears that if Emily becomes literate she will leave him. His violence toward Emily over the issue of literacy lands him first in jail, then in a mental institution where he is forced to learn to read enough, with Hannah Goodman's help, to respond to the hospital staff's written questions. As part of a six-year probation, a judge forces Peter to attend literacy classes. There is hope now that he will support Emily's efforts to learn to read and write.
