The rich history of automobile manufacturing in Europe stems from the talents and labor of a great number of people-inventors, designers, engineers, entrepreneurs, executives, and others-who shaped the industry from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the present day. This biographical dictionary profiles some 600 of the most important figures, summarizing their lives and careers and recounting their specific contributions to the industry or to individual companies or models. It includes not only those whose names grace some of the world's most famous marques, such as Carl Benz, Enzo Ferrari, Ferdinand Porsche, and André Citroën, but many who are little known today despite their accomplishments. The late Jan P. Norbye wrote for a multitude of publications including Car and Driver, Automotive News and Automobile Quarterly. He died in 2003, shortly after completing this manuscript. He lived in Les Issambres, France.
