The subjects of professional ethics and the legal aspects of radiologic technology are addressed to enhance the understanding of the radiographer's obligation to his profession and to the law. This new edition includes the latest techniques used in imaging and meets the current requirements of The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) and The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Patient care is a dynamic subject so updates are important. The previous edition was published in 2003. Purpose:According to the authors, the purpose is to provide a book that serves "the needs of the beginning student in this profession as well as those who desire advanced courses in imaging technologies." This book is an important resource for beginning students, but it is also a good for students taking advanced courses to brush up on what they have learned in their basic program as well as learn what's new in patient care related to newer imaging technologies.Audience:This book meets the needs of both its intended audiences, although its strength is in its presentation of the basic material for beginning imaging students. The authors include a nurse practitioner skilled in patient care and two highly qualified radiologic technologists, an excellent combination of authors for this book.Features:All necessary information that an imaging professional needs to appropriately care for patients undergoing these procedures is covered in this book. The chapters flow in a logical order from professional issues to care during special procedures. All the important material is covered without overwhelming beginning students. The color photos, tables, and displays are very helpful for students since much of this material is taught before they enter the clinical site. Each chapter has a Situation Judgment Question, a valuable feature since these questions are now asked on the ARRT registry exam. The CD is an excellent addition. I particularly like the videos showing patient care tasks, such as transferring patients using a slider board and taking a blood pressure. I would like to see many more videos, because these don't begin to cover all the proficiencies required of students. There is also an excellent website that contains valuable resources for students and instructors. The two things that bothered me in previous editions of this book have been corrected. Infection control and surgical asepsis are now covered in consecutive chapters, and the pharmacology and drug administration chapters are now combined. Assessment:I have been using this book since its second edition and I have seen it change as the radiologic technologist's involvement in patient care has changed. It is an excellent book that covers all patient care subjects appropriately. It is easy to read and logically organized. The only direct competitor to this book is Patient Care in Radiography: With an Introduction to Medical Imaging, 7th edition, Ehrlich and Daly (Elsevier, 2009). It, too, is an excellent book.
