\ From The CriticsReviewer: Martin C. Yorath, DPM(Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science)\ Description: Part of the Health Reference Series, this book geared towards the general public imparts information about the diagnosis and treatment of disorders, diseases, and injuries of the foot and ankle. As a positive statement for podiatry, it works, and as providers of health for feet, ankles and lower extremities, podiatrists should be aware of it. It is an excellent resource for our patients.\ Purpose: This book is designed to provide consumers of foot health with the information they need on a variety of disorders, including general treatment principles, and when and from whom to seek care. Although there have been various types of consumer "foot books" published in the past, none are as comprehensive as this one. It does indeed meet its objectives.\ Audience: Primarily written for patients in the North American market, this is clearly a very useful book for practitioners as well, particularly for the references it provides. There are many contributors to this book, in addition to an overall consultant.\ Features: Divided into five sections covering local conditions, deformities, and injuries of the foot and ankle, the book also includes a very helpful directory of foot and ankle resources. For both practitioners and patients, the additional help and information section is particularly well done, containing many useful addresses. Perhaps the only shortcoming of the book is that it has few illustrations. This may make it less appealing to the general public, but does not detract from its usefulness.\ Assessment: Although there have been other books aimed at the general public, such as Hlavac's Foot Book: Advice for Athletes (Anderson World, 1978) and Copeland's The Foot Doctor: Lifetime Relief for Your Aching Feet (Macmillan, 2000), this one is more of a practical reference manual. It contains sufficiently new material to justify a second edition, and is to be recommended to patients and practitioners alike.\ \
