This new Third Edition provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology and development of stuttering and details appropriate approaches to accurate assessment and treatment. A new chapter on related fluency disorders discusses evaluation and treatment of stuttering associated with neurological disease or trauma, psychological disturbance, or mental retardation, and explains how developmental stuttering can be differentiated from these conditions. This edition also features a new chapter on preliminaries to assessment as well as new information on differential diagnosis of stuttering versus other fluency disorders. Appendices include forms for diagnosis and evaluation. Patrick Finn The author is a widely recognized authority in the area of stuttering. The first edition of this book was published in 1991. This second edition describes an integrated approach to understanding the nature and treatment of stuttering. Like the first, this edition is intended for speech-language pathology students and is designed to teach them to become effective clinicians. The major shortcoming of this book is that the author has failed to integrate any of the treatment outcome research into his approach. As a result, his objective to teach students to become effective clinicians is seriously limited because of the absence of any empirical knowledge that could guide students in selecting treatments. While this clearly written and well-organized book might serve as a source for therapy ideas, instructors would be advised to add readings on treatment outcome research, such as Cordes and Ingham's Treatment Efficacy for Stuttering: A Search for Empirical Bases (Singular, 1998).
