Dr. Kopans' best-selling text and reference on breast imaging is now in its thoroughly revised, updated Third Edition. The author combines a complete, superbly illustrated atlas of imaging findings with a comprehensive text that covers all imaging modalities and addresses all aspects of breast imaging—including breast anatomy, histology, physiology, pathology, breast cancer staging, and preoperative localization of occult lesions. This edition includes state-of-the-art information on a new modality, digital breast tomosynthesis, as well as on digital mammography, MRI, ultrasound, and percutaneous breast biopsy. The book contains more than 2,100 images obtained with the latest technology, including many new mammograms and scans using other imaging modalities. New England Journal of Medicine Whether or not one agrees with the author, his opinions are always thought-provoking....he questions the justification for every diagnostic protocol and never accepts old or new dogma at face value. One of the book's final chapters, on the medicolegal aspects of breast imaging, which in other hands could have been a dry legalistic discourse, is instead filled with perceptive observations that get right to the central problems of our highly flawed medicolegal system. Breast Imaging is an extraordinary book.

\ From The CriticsReviewer: Dana Smetherman, MD(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)\ Description: This comprehensive review of breast imaging is an excellent resource for all interested in this area, from residents to practicing radiologists, even those with considerable experience.\ Purpose: As in previous editions, the authors are largely successful in providing a complete review. The book covers the range of topics facing breast imagers, from underlying breast anatomy and pathology all the way to malpractice liability issues.\ Audience: The target audience is "all interested in the subject regardless of level of experience." The book is an excellent complete primary source for residents even in their earliest rotations in breast imaging. In addition, it would be a great resource for radiologists in practice. The authors are successful in their efforts to update the book, paying particular attention to new imaging modalities and expanding some pathologic topics. \ Features: "The book begins with a very thorough review of anatomy and pathology. The authors then address the concepts behind breast cancer screening, including the controversy surrounding the efficacy of screening mammography. Although the authors recognize that digital mammography will probably replace film-screen mammography in the not too distant future, they maintain the chapters detailing equipment concerns and physics, mammographic QA/QC, and positioning, recognizing that, new technologies aside, mammography will probably remain a mainstay of breast imaging for the foreseeable future. Like the previous editions, the image quality is excellent and the chapters have been appropriately updated to include newer imaging technologies (particularly MRI) when indicated. The chapters on management issues provide useful insight, particularly for less experienced radiologists, into how the authors actually go about their day-to-day practice. The chapter dealing with the breast imaging report, though somewhat rudimentary to those more familiar with the field, is a necessary inclusion in a book that aims to give a comprehensive approach to breast imaging and incorporates revisions to the ACR lexicon. "\ Assessment: "This edition continues to provide a complete, inclusive review of breast imaging useful to radiologists at all levels of experience. The additions and modifications since the previous editions reflect the changes in the specialty that have occurred in recent years and anticipate the expected evolution over the next few years.
